From the moment a baby enters the world, they begin adjusting to an environment that is completely different from the quiet, warm place they experienced during pregnancy.

Suddenly, there is light, sound, touch, scent, and movement all around them. Although newborns spend much of their early days sleeping and feeding, their senses are already active. They begin learning through every small interaction with the people caring for them.

The reassuring news for every mother is that your baby does not need lots of toys or complicated activities to learn. At this stage, your face, voice, touch, and response to their needs are the most important tools for helping them discover the world and feel safe.

What Can a Baby See During Their First Days?

A newborn’s vision is still in the early stages of development, so objects that are far away may appear blurry.

During the first few weeks, babies can notice light, shapes, and movement. However, they see most clearly at a distance of approximately 20 to 30 centimetres. This is roughly the distance between your face and your baby’s face while feeding or holding them.

Newborns are also naturally interested in faces, clear patterns, and high-contrast colours such as black and white.

To gently encourage your baby to use their vision:

Bring your face close to theirs while feeding or changing their nappy.

Speak to them while looking in their direction, without trying to force eye contact.

Show them a simple high-contrast image for a short period.

Move your face or the image slowly rather than making quick movements.

It is normal for a newborn to occasionally look away or for their eyes to move unevenly at first. Their ability to control and coordinate their eye movements is still developing.

Your Voice Is More Than Just a Sound

Babies begin hearing sounds before birth. After they are born, their mother’s voice is often one of the most familiar and comforting sounds to them.

When you speak softly, sing, or describe what you are doing, your baby will not understand the words yet. However, they begin recognising your tone, rhythm, and patterns of speech, which introduces them to the foundations of communication.

A 2024 study involving hospitalised newborns found that hearing their mother’s voice helped reduce pain responses in some babies during a simple medical procedure. This does not mean that a parent’s voice can replace medical treatment, but it highlights how comforting the voice of a familiar caregiver can be for a newborn.

You can use simple phrases throughout the day, such as:

“Good morning, my love.”

“We’re going to change your nappy now.”

“I’m right here.”

“I heard you, and I came to you.”

You do not need to use educational language. What matters most is that your voice is calm, warm, and natural.

Touch Is Your Baby’s First Language

Gentle touch and cuddling are among the first ways a newborn experiences and understands the world.

When you hold your baby carefully, place your hand gently on their body, or practise skin-to-skin contact, you help them feel warm, secure, and protected.

Recent research reviews suggest that early skin-to-skin contact may offer several benefits, particularly in supporting breastfeeding and helping regulate some of the baby’s responses after birth. However, the strength of the evidence may vary depending on the baby’s health and the type of delivery.

Skin-to-skin contact can be practised by placing your baby, wearing only a nappy, directly against your chest and covering them with a blanket. You should be fully awake, able to hold your baby safely, and both you and your baby should be medically well enough for the practice.

When a baby is premature, has a medical condition, or is being cared for in a neonatal unit, the timing and duration of skin-to-skin contact should be guided by the medical team.

Your Scent Helps Your Baby Recognise You

A newborn’s sense of smell is active from birth. Over time, babies begin associating familiar scents with feeding, comfort, and safety.

For this reason, it may be helpful to avoid wearing strong perfumes while holding your baby, particularly during the early days.

Your natural scent, voice, and the way you hold your baby all help them recognise you and feel reassured in your arms.

Movement Is Another Way to Discover the World

Babies do not need to spend all their time in a cot, carrier, or baby seat. When they are awake, they need simple and safe opportunities to move their arms and legs freely.

They can also begin having very short periods of tummy time, as long as they are fully awake and continuously supervised.

According to recommendations from the US National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, most babies can begin tummy time one or two days after birth. This may start with two or three short sessions each day, lasting around three to five minutes, with the duration gradually increasing as the baby grows.

At first, you can try:

Placing your baby on your chest while you are safely supported in a slightly reclined position.

Placing your baby on their tummy on a firm, safe surface while you remain directly in front of them.

Trying a short session after a nappy change or when your baby wakes up.

When your baby becomes uncomfortable or begins crying, pick them up and try again at another time. The aim is not to pressure them, but to introduce movement gradually and positively.

Important: Tummy time should only take place while the baby is awake and under the constant supervision of an adult.

For sleep, babies should always be placed on their backs on a firm, flat mattress, with no pillows, toys, or loose blankets around them.

A Simple Routine to Help Your Baby Explore

You do not need to set aside long periods for learning activities. Your baby discovers the world through ordinary moments throughout the day.

During feeding: Look at your baby and speak softly.

During nappy changes: Name parts of their body or gently explain what you are doing.

While they are awake: Give them a safe opportunity to move and look around.

During cuddles: Use gentle touch and speak or sing to them.

Before sleep: Reduce bright lights and noise to help them settle.

A few minutes of calm interaction several times throughout the day is more than enough during the newborn stage.

In reality, the first world your baby discovers is not their bedroom or their toys. Their first world is your embrace, your voice, your face, and the way you respond to their needs.

You do not need to do everything perfectly. Your presence and connection during simple everyday moments are the true beginning of your baby’s learning journey.

Every time you look at your baby, speak to them, hold them, or respond to their cries, you are helping them understand one very important message:

“The world is a safe place, and someone close to me is listening, caring, and responding to my needs.”
