From the very first day of your baby’s life, they begin communicating with you—even before they can smile or say their first word.

Crying, body movements, eye contact, feeding patterns, and even turning their face away are all ways your baby may be trying to tell you that they are hungry, tired, in need of comfort, or overwhelmed by the sounds and activity around them.

This is where responsive care comes in. It means noticing your baby’s cues, trying to understand what they may mean, and responding appropriately and at the right time.

It does not mean that you have to understand every cue correctly on the first attempt, or that you must be constantly available and smiling. Responsive care is simply a relationship built through observation, gentle attempts, thoughtful responses, and continuous learning between you and your baby.

What Is Responsive Care?

Responsive care involves three simple steps:

Notice the cue: Your baby cries, turns their head, looks at you, or begins to become restless.

Try to understand it: Are they hungry, sleepy, uncomfortable, in need of a nappy change, looking for closeness, or simply needing some quiet?

Respond appropriately: Feed them, hold them, reduce noise and stimulation, or give them time to rest.

Your first response will not always work. You may think your baby is hungry and then realise that they actually need to sleep.

What matters is that you remain close, respond calmly, and adjust your approach according to your baby’s reaction.

Over time, you will begin to recognise your baby’s cues more clearly. Your baby will also learn that their attempts to communicate are noticed and met with care and reassurance.

Why Is Responsive Care Important from the First Day?

A baby’s brain develops rapidly during the early years of life. Simple daily interactions with a parent or caregiver help build an important foundation for learning, communication, emotional development, and a sense of security.

When your baby makes a sound, moves their body, or looks at you, and you respond with your voice, touch, or facial expression, a type of conversation takes place between you—even without words.

These interactions gradually help your baby:

Feel safe and secure.

Understand that their signals have meaning.

Learn the foundations of communication and turn-taking.

Regulate their emotions with the support of an adult.

Build a warm relationship with their parent or caregiver.

Develop social and language skills over time.

Responsive care is not an extra activity that requires a separate part of your day. It happens naturally during feeding, nappy changes, cuddling, play, and bedtime routines.

How Does a Newborn Communicate with You?

Newborns do not only cry when they need something. They communicate through a range of cues, some of which are clear while others require closer observation.

Signs of Hunger

Before your baby begins crying, you may notice that they:

Turn their head as though searching for the breast or bottle.

Open their mouth.

Bring their hand towards their mouth.

Suck their fingers or make sucking movements.

Begin moving or becoming restless.

Crying is often a later sign of hunger. By this point, your baby may already be distressed, which can make it more difficult for them to begin feeding.

Responding to early hunger cues can therefore make feeding easier and calmer for both you and your baby.

Signs of Fullness

Your baby may show that they have had enough when they:

Slow down or stop feeding.

Close their mouth.

Turn their head away.

Relax their hands and body.

Lose interest in feeding.

Responsive feeding means offering a feed when your baby shows signs of hunger and respecting signs of fullness without pressuring them to finish a specific amount.

Your baby’s feeding and growth should still be monitored with the support of their doctor.

Signs of Sleepiness

Your baby may need to sleep when they:

Yawn.

Look away.

Become less active or increasingly irritable.

Rub their face.

Open and close their eyes.

Begin crying without an obvious reason.

When you notice these signs, reduce light, sound, and activity. Hold your baby calmly and help them prepare for sleep in a safe way.

Signs That Your Baby Is Overstimulated

Sometimes a baby is not hungry or sleepy, but has simply been exposed to more sound, movement, faces, or activity than they can comfortably manage.

You may notice that your baby:

Looks or turns away.

Stiffens their body.

Moves their arms and legs restlessly.

Begins crying or whimpering.

Yawns or sneezes repeatedly.

Appears uncomfortable after previously being calm.

In this situation, your baby may not need another toy or further attempts to gain their attention.

They may simply need a quieter environment, softer lighting, a calmer voice, and a comforting cuddle.

Signs That Your Baby Is Ready to Interact

The best time to interact with a newborn is when they are awake and calm.

You may notice that your baby:

Has their eyes open and is looking around.

Focuses on your face or voice.

Has a relaxed body.

Moves their arms and legs comfortably.

Makes small sounds.

Use these brief moments to look at your baby, speak to them, or imitate the sounds they make. Then pause and give them time to respond in their own way.

Crying Is a Message, Not Bad Behaviour

During the early months, crying is your baby’s main way of asking for help.

Your baby is not trying to control you, and they are not crying because they have become “too used to being held”.

When your baby cries, begin by checking their basic needs:

Do they need to feed?

Does their nappy need changing?

Are they too hot or too cold?

Do they need to burp?

Are they tired and ready to sleep?

Do they need a cuddle or a familiar voice?

Is the environment too bright or noisy?

You may not always understand the reason immediately. Sometimes you may need to try several things before your baby settles.

Your presence and your attempts to comfort them are an important part of responsive care, even when the crying does not stop straight away.

Does Holding and Comforting a Baby Spoil Them?

A newborn does not have the ability to plan or use crying to manipulate the person caring for them.

Holding, comforting, and responding to your baby’s needs will not spoil them. Instead, it helps them understand that someone close to them notices their signals and is trying to help.

Independence does not begin by leaving a newborn to manage discomfort alone. It develops gradually when a child feels safe and receives support that is appropriate for their age.

Examples of Responsive Care Throughout the Day

During Feeding

Observe your baby’s hunger and fullness cues rather than relying only on the clock or a fixed quantity, unless your doctor has recommended a specific feeding schedule for your baby’s condition.

Look at your baby, touch them gently, and pause when they appear tired or need to burp.

When feeding is difficult or your baby is not gaining weight appropriately, seek support from a paediatrician or qualified feeding specialist.

During Nappy Changes

Speak calmly and explain what you are doing:

“We’re going to change your nappy now.”

“I’m going to lift your leg gently.”

Your baby will not understand the words at first, but they will begin recognising your voice and tone. They will also gradually associate repeated routines with familiar sounds and language.

During Interaction

Bring your face close enough for your baby to see and speak or sing in a calm voice.

When they look at you or make a sound, respond and then pause for a moment.

Give your baby the opportunity to begin and end the interaction. When they look away or become restless, this may be their way of saying, “I need a break.”

During Comforting

Try cuddling, safe skin-to-skin contact, gentle movement, or speaking in a quiet voice.

Every baby is different. A method that comforts one baby may not work for another. Over time, you will discover which approaches help your baby feel most settled.

Before Sleep

Help your baby gradually recognise the difference between active and quiet periods by reducing lighting, sound, and movement before sleep.

Regardless of how your baby is comforted, they should be placed to sleep on their back, on a firm and flat surface, in a sleep space free from pillows, toys, and loose bedding.

Responsive Care Does Not Mean Constant Stimulation

Your baby does not need entertainment, conversation, or toys throughout the entire day.

Sleep, quiet time, and simply looking around without continuous interaction are also important.

Helpful interaction is interaction that matches your baby’s current state:

When they are ready to engage, speak and play with them.

When they look away, give them space.

When they become tired, help them settle.

When they fall asleep, allow them to rest in a safe sleeping space.

The goal is not to provide more activities. It is to offer the right response at the right moment.

Do I Have to Respond Perfectly Every Time?

No parent will correctly understand every cue on the first attempt.

Sometimes you will understand your baby quickly, while at other times you may need to try several approaches. You may also feel exhausted or need support.

Responsive care is not a test of perfect parenting. It is a relationship that develops gradually.

Even when you misunderstand a cue, respond later than you intended, or become overwhelmed, you can calm yourself, hold your baby, and begin again.

What matters is an overall pattern of attention, care, and effort—not perfection.

You Need Care Too

Responding to a newborn requires energy, and a lack of sleep can make the first few weeks extremely demanding.

Ask a trusted person for help when you need it. Take time to eat, shower, or sleep while another responsible adult safely cares for your baby.

When your baby’s crying makes you feel extremely overwhelmed or angry, place them on their back in a safe sleeping space and step away for a few minutes while you calm down. Ask someone for support, and never shake a baby.

Looking after yourself is not the opposite of responsive care. It is part of it.

A calmer and more supported caregiver is often better able to notice and respond to a baby’s needs.

When Does Crying or a Change in Behaviour Require Medical Attention?

Responsive care can help you become familiar with your baby’s usual behaviour and notice changes. However, it is not a replacement for medical care.

Seek prompt medical advice when your newborn:

Refuses to feed or feeds noticeably less than usual.

Is difficult to wake or moves much less than normal.

Has difficulty breathing or is breathing unusually quickly.

Appears blue, grey, or unusually pale.

Has an abnormally high or low temperature.

Experiences seizures.

Has a weak cry or a cry that suddenly sounds different.

Has significantly fewer wet nappies.

Shows any worrying change, or you feel that something is not right.

A newborn’s condition can change quickly. When you are concerned, do not continue trying only different soothing techniques or wait for the problem to pass.

Contact your baby’s doctor or seek appropriate medical care.

Responsive care is not a strict set of rules, and it does not mean that you must understand the reason behind every cry.

It means observing your baby, trying to understand their message, and responding with warmth in a way that suits their needs and stage of development.

From the very first day, every look you respond to, every comforting cuddle, and every time you respect your baby’s hunger, fullness, or need for rest helps create a quiet conversation without words.

Through these repeated moments, your baby begins learning one of the most important messages of their early life:

“I am heard. My needs matter, and someone is here for me.”
